This course is designed to empower caregivers to enhance mobility, safety, and the overall quality of life for clients living with Parkinson’s Disease (PD). The curriculum begins with a foundational understanding of the condition, training caregivers to recognize both the "Big Four" motor symptoms and the "invisible" non-motor symptoms. Caregivers will gain practical, hands-on strategies to support activities of daily living (ADLs), including specialized methods for dressing and grooming, managing dietary safety for swallowing difficulties, maintaining proactive skin care, and navigating communication challenges like "masked face".
The second half of the course focuses on clinical coordination and safety, emphasizing medication timing and the critical "On/Off" phenomenon, where a client's movement shifts from fluid to stiff and frozen as medications wear off. To prevent injuries, the training teaches caregivers how to manage "Freezing of Gait" (FOG), correctly utilize assistive devices, and implement essential fall prevention measures in the home. Finally, the curriculum prepares caregivers for the broader caregiving environment by addressing how to support the client's family, recognize medical emergency signs, and complete professional documentation using standardized abbreviations and caregiver "cheat sheets".
